#93: Would You Trade Freedom for an Easy Paycheck?
It depends..
MMV here,
I’ve been at a crossroads lately. As you’ve probably seen on the news, federal employees were told that work had to be done 100% in-office. That means hybrid work arrangements were cancelled.
These past five months have been annoying to say the least. Each way, it takes me about 1 hour and 20 minutes so I spend almost 3 hours commuting each day. That’s a heck of a lot of time!
My stress and anxiety level from the work is near zero, but the commute has taken a toll on me so this has me contemplating the tradeoffs of this job..

Nvidia just received the green light to China-specific A.I. chip known as H20, shortly after Nvidia became the first $4 trillion company. AMD also received government approval to restart sales of it's A.I. chip for China, the MI308. And you bet your as* that insiders in Congress traded on it.

Major Announcement
MMV Pro is coming!
Originally, my newsletter had a premium tier. It was doing surprisingly well.
But I decided to switch from Substack to beehiiv (if you thought about moving from Substack to beehiiv, I highly recommend it!) and payments didn’t transfer over and there was a learning curve with a new platform so I decided to pause the premium tier.
Now, I’m planning to relaunch the premium tier and calling it MMV Pro!
Why sign up for MMV Pro?
MMV Pro will give you access to practical playbooks, tools, and insight that help you master your money and reach financial independence faster than you thought.
✅ Exclusive (MMV Pro member-only newsletters) real-life case studies of community members’ money journeys — complete with actual numbers, budgets, income streams, mistakes, and lessons learned — so members see exactly how others build wealth and freedom
✅ Included budget tracking dashboard designed personally by me that is intuitive and less time-consuming than others. I HATE tracking my own money to the fine details because it’s so time consuming. This tracker will be a lot easier to maintain.
✅ Exclusive interviews with selected guests vetted by me. You all know I hate fake gurus like @theficouple who exaggerate lie about their success. These guests will be selected for their expertise in specific niches that will help MMV Pro members!
✅ MMV Pro member-only AMAs where I’ll offer more transparency
✅ Lifetime access to past issues of premium case studies, breakdowns, and templates — forever.
✅ Other benefits to be added later once I figure out the technical details like mini-courses and a community forum.
Once released, the early members will lock the MMV Pro membership at the lowest price it will ever be, even when more features and tools are released.
As promised, the people who were subscribed to my previous newsletter’s premium subscription when I changed platforms will be gifted a free annual membership. I truly appreciate each of you for your support and I do not take it for granted!
The Brief
The Crossroads: Freedom vs. Easy Paycheck
Joining federal service as a government employee checked off several boxes:
✅ meaningful work
✅ hybrid work schedule
✅ good pay (>$130K)
✅ job security
✅ easier than consulting (I avoided applying to any consulting roles)
It was the complete OPPOSITE of my consulting job:
⭕️ unfulfilling work
⭕️ in-person requirement
⭕️ high pay (>$200K)
⭕️ up-or-out system
⭕️ extremely demanding
That equation changed as soon as the current administration came in. The hybrid work schedule went away and job security was questionable for me for a good 6 months (but I should be in the clear now).
Every day as I commute on the train, I think about what I’m going to do because I can’t keep wasting my time commuting for the next 3.5 years so the idea of going back to the private sector has crossed my mind.
With a private sector job, I would go back into the grind of working longer hours and performing at a higher level with less job security, but hopefully at a higher pay.
Or should I just stick it out?

If you had to pick one, which would you choose?
It’s funny how I feel this way AFTER I passed my probationary period, received a “5” on my performance appraisal, and deemed “safe” from any RIF (reduction in force).
But would I regret leaving federal service after moving to DC with my wife?
Luckily, my wife has established herself at her work and enjoys working with her team. She even got a significant raise that will take effect soon so we would still stay in the area.
While the idea of pursuing another career outside of government is appealing to me, I am held back due to a 2-year service agreement I signed in exchange for a 20% sign-on bonus. I still have 10 more months to go.
As of now, my game plan is to wait and hope that I’m allowed to have a hybrid work schedule again in the near future and to reconsider a possible exit in the spring when my 2-year is approaching.
In the grand scheme of things, this is truly a first world problem. Just 8 years ago, I was a brand new consultant thinking I made it, but living paycheck to paycheck and very unhappy.
This post from @coldbrew.finance is a very stark reminder of how I used to live.
This is a very common occurrence amongst consultants and investment bankers. Get that big job, get an MBA, and move up the ladder because you have to pay those student loans and keep up with your peers.
At that point, your fear is having to change your job on LinkedIn to a no-name company in a role that is seen as a downgrade. What people think matters a lot to you.
Ever hear about the jokes of people going on dates and all their date can talk about is their work? Very common in consulting because work consumes your life and eventually it becomes your identity - YUCK!
