THE BRIEF
Hey all, it’s MMV.
If you’re reading this, you probably obsess over personal finances like me.
We track our net worth, we know our savings rate, and we know our FIRE number.
But almost no one equally focuses as much on the thing that determines whether they’ll actually enjoy any of it.
Their health.
Health is our most important asset and it’s often the thing sacrificed for every day life obligations. We skip the gym because we’re working late and we give up our mental health for stressful jobs.
But here’s a reminder that we need to remember: wealth without health is pointless.
For the past 2 years, I’ve been more intentional with my health. It even influenced my decision to change my career.
If you’ve been neglecting your health and want to start investing in yourself, I’m going to share strategies on how you can get started.

THE BRIEF
The Tradeoff We All Make
Corporate office jobs come with invisible costs. It’s not just the long hours in the office. It influences our lifestyle outside of the office.
We’re sitting all day.
Our eyes are glued to a digital screen with constant digital stimulation like the dreaded the Teams ping.
Little physical movement for hours.
Low-grade chronic stress
These things compound over time, but in the wrong direction.
Two years ago, I decided to take my health more seriously because while I was being very intentional about my financial health, I was being passive with my physical health.
Focusing on my health was part of the reason why I changed careers.
Here are two benefits I got from pivoting my career from office work to law enforcement:
I have more of a reason to stay in shape as part of my work day INCLUDES exercising
I’m not internally dying inside from office work.
Ever since I seriously considered the new job, I lost 20 pounds in about 3 months just from adding cardio to my work out routine. FYI I haven’t been at my current weight since 2019-2020 (I gained that COVID weight and never lost it).
Not only do I feel better physically, but I feel better mentally too.
No more constant low-grade stress from endless office work that is pointless and no more endless meetings that could’ve been an email.
This Is a Generational Problem
Millennials were handed a specific kind of anxiety.
We were told to go to college to get a good job, graduated with massive student loan debt, told to hustle our way up the corporate ladder, and then get hit with layoffs across sectors because of AI and corporate greed.
But that same hustle culture normalized running ourselves into the ground. Burnout is expected. Poor sleep became a productivity flex. The idea of slowing down felt like falling behind.
This is why the Millennial Career Crisis is happening..
We sacrifice our health in order to be “successful” in society.

Treating Your Health Like Your Investments
Just like our investments, you need to think of your health like compound interest. The decisions you make today will show a return-on-investment (ROI) later on.
If you’ve ever gone to the gym or went on a diet consistently, you know that you don’t see results right away. It sucks.. you’re sore or hungry all the time.
But around month 3 or 4, someone asks you, “have you been working out?”.
Imagine the ROI in year 10 or 20.
Just like how older adults tell us to save for retirement because they wish they did earlier in life, they’ll also agree that you should stay on top of your health earlier in life.
Another way to look at it is the cost now vs later. I have friends who bought houses during 2022-2024 and they WISH they bought earlier because it was cheaper. You’ll look back and think “I wish I started this earlier”.
I don’t need a PhD to tell you that regular strength training reduces mortality risk or that consistently sleeping 7-9 hours a night improves cognitive performance, metabolism health, and emotional regulation. These are facts that we all know, just like how smokers know cigarettes cause cancer.
Start with a Health Audit
Book your annual physical if you haven’t had one in over a year. Get bloodwork done. Know your numbers like blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose, vitamin D, hormones, and anything specific to your age and history. I use Function Health, but there are others like Superpower that provide much more data on your biomarkers than traditional labs at the doctor’s office. If you have Chase Sapphire, there’s an offer for a discount in your Chase Offers.
Honestly calculate how many hours per week you spend moving intentionally. Your commute (if you walk), if you regularly go to the gym, go on evening walks or whatnot. I track my work outs through my health tracking device.
Track your average sleep for one week. Consistently under 7 hours is a compounding liability. Your body needs to rest even if you feel like your mind doesn’t. Use an Apple Watch if you have one. I wear my Amazfit Helio strap 24/7.
Look at what you’re eating. Are your regular meals consumed out of convenience or cravings? You want to be intentional with what you put in your body. Think of your body like a premium sports car. You don’t want to put crappy oil or cheap gas in a premium car.
Why I’m Doing This
The whole point of building wealth is to buy freedom. Wealth and health aren’t competing priorities. They’re co-dependencies. One without the other is an incomplete plan.
My goal is to live a fulfilling life which includes having minimal financial strain that dictates my decisions and living a long, healthy life to maximize my enjoyment.
Here are some of the changes I made over the last 2 years, just so you have an idea of what can happen:
I get my bloodwork done annually.
I started supplementing with Vitamin D (was deficient in this), magnesium (for better sleep), and zinc (for hormones).
I’m going to start taking Omega-3 for cholesterol.
Drinking more water (I was really bad at this).
Getting 7-9 hours of sleep. I’ve been sleeping around 11pm lately.
Started running (for my job) but it’s been helpful with losing weight.
Eating more fish for healthy fats.
These small changes should have long, lasting impacts because I started some of these more recently and I’m already noticing the improvements.
Let’s all live a long, healthy life while building our wealth together.
